Warmness of the Cone Color black inks

Hello,

I am switching to Cone Color on a SP 7800. I only switched the black inks for now (Matte HD / LK and LLK ) as I do 80% BW printing with QTR on this printer. The other channels are still with OEM.

After some printing session, I noticed my BW getting warmer and warmer. I printed the “Ink separation” file from QTR and noticed the LK and LLK are really warmer than the OEM.

Is that something normal ? Or could it be that the ink is outdated ? I didn’t see any expiration date on the bottles

As an entire ink set you will find it works and in balance, but as for using just our blacks we specialize in carbon (which is warm) rather than mixing carbon and dye (to colorize it more neutral) as does Epson. So, we do not try and equal EPSON on any one particular ink but rather equal the entire color output when used with the color workflow. The exception to this is that we do now offer UltraHD Matte Black which is at least a full photographic stop darker than EPSON Matte Black and we made the new HD Photo Black glossier and slightly darker than EPSON PK. We are still offering the regular Matte Black but no longer the regular Photo Black.

For black&white printing we offer a completely monochromatic ink system called Piezography Pro which produces tens of thousands more gray levels than just using EPSON three ink QTR workflow. Some of our color ink customers who also use QTR for black & white printing have used as LK and LLK some of our Piezography K7 inks. Some have chosen to use shades 2 & 4 in our warm pure CarbonK7, and others use the Selenium, Neutral, or Warm Neutral… then they just make custom ICC profiles for their color work but enjoy a specific monochromatic look in b&w with the three blacks in QTR. Almost everyone now has adapted our deeper darker UltraHD MK although we still have enough customers of regular MK to keep it.

regards,

Jon

Alright, thanks for your answer.

If I understand, the tonality of the blacks are balanced with the colours channels ? Does it mean it will be a bit out for colour printing if I keep the OEM for the colour channels?

(About the HD Matte, I use it for some years now, I love it for uncoated paper, it opened a lot of possibilities)

It should not be a problem if you use ICC profiles. But if you are not using ICC profiles you would need adjust your color workflow.
