Can the chipless firmware modification be done to a SC-P800 that has been in use since 2016?

I don’t see why not. I got my P800 June 2020 And used the Epson inks until October when the P900 arrived, At that point I downloaded and installed the “chipless solution” in the P800 in order to us it for Piezography. Works very well and haven’t had any issues.

Was the firmware conversion difficult?

You need to follow the directions to do so as it is not the most straight forward as simply as point and click. There are You Tube videos that do an excellent job of explaining it.
