Storing and Transporting 3800 cartridges

I have had printing problems with my 3800 with black smear lines along the border. I have tried all the suggested cleaning methods and nothing works. What is the best method for removing the cartridges and storing the ink for future use with a new 3800? Do I need to remove the ink from the cartridges and put the ink back in the bottles? Do the cartridges need to be washed out? All advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
