Signing gloss prints

I’m delighted to be able to ask this question after my recent drama. When signing gloss prints, is it preferable to sign before applying the GO coat or after, or doesn’t it matter?

It’s hard to sign over GO with pencil, and I’m not familiar with different archival pens that might be available, and how they’d work on a glossy surface (there may be a good pen that is archival and works on gloss paper), but I know many people sign with pencil on the back of the sheet.
