New P9000 OEM cartridge needs firmware update?

Been using Pro Matte Bl. ink with IM reuseable cart for quite some time. Rest of inkset is OEM. Just received new OEM cart and instructions says to upload update into printer or the cart won’t work. Yikes.
Will the firmware update disable my much needed IM matte BL. reuseable cart? Say it aint so

The update is to use EPSON cartridges but it has not affected 3rd party smart chips. EPSON ran out of smart chips and now uses chips which can not track ink levels. Ours are smart chips and the firmware is backwards compatible.
