MK vs PK and Gloss Optimizer on matte papers

In the spirit of there are no stupid questions, here goes three of them. Piezography Pro Ink Sets being used.

  1. Printers that have both MK and PK ink sets, Epson 7900 & 3880, using Pro ink sets do I need to switch the printer from MK to PK and vice versa if I am running on a glossy/luster paper versus a matte paper just as I would do with original Epson inks?

  2. I’ve seen some other posts on this question but not with directions on doing so. Can you print on a smooth matte paper, such as CI Rag Photo or Epson Hot Press Bright and apply the Gloss Optimizer? If so, does it require creating a custom curve/print profile to do so?

  3. Is there a way to set Gloss Optimizer to only cover image print area?

Appreciate any support. Thank you.

  1. Both printers require manual switching of the black inks. They will not auto-switch with any settings from QTR.

  2. You can apply gloss optimizer to any paper but it will only appear glossy on non-matte papers. It can just slightly deepen the effects on matte paper. You would not need to create a new linearization. Rather, you could copy the gloss channel data from an existing glossy profile and replace the non-printing data in the matte profile with it. You can use simpletext or similar to do this. I just do not think the gains are what you are looking for.

  3. Yes. We provide those as part of the community edition download and you can transfer the install command into Curves/7900-9900-K5/NoWhiteGCO-Curves to install those. You may want to change the name of the command from Install7900-ProK5.command to Install7900-ProK5-NGW.command

Same for the 3880…

this is how it is done manually by manipulating the GCO ink channel in a text editor:

Happy printing!

Thank you Jon.

Very pleased with the quality of black and white prints I’m achieving with the Piezography inks.
