Issue with Epson p600 reading CISS cartridge chips

I have your CISS for a p600 which works great except that nearly every time I print it complains that it can’t read one or more chips. I need to remove & replace the little piece that tells it the cartridge cover is closed at least once and sometimes more than once before it reads all the chips.

Is this normal behavior for this printer & CISS? Anything I can do so it remembers the chips?

Also, when I remove the plastic piece and then remove and replace a cartridge that is registering low (not completely out), it doesn’t reset to full. Does this only happen when the printer thinks it is empty, or is something not working right?
