Epson 3800 vs 3880

I understood that the main difference between an Epson 3800 and 3880 were the inks. With the Cone inks both these printers are using the same ink. (Or at least I thought) If that is the case, what is the difference(s) between these two printers with the Cone inks?

The 3800 uses regular M and LM inks while the 3880 uses VM and VLM inks. All the other color positions are the same. This is similar to OEM where 3800 is K3 and 3880 is K3 Vivid.

However, we updated the set to include UltraHD Matte Black which increases dMax to 1.87 over the 1.62 of the OEM inks and the new HD Photo Black is a little darker but more glossier than the OEM ink.

I’m a bit confused. I’m purchasing the Pro 3800 - ConeColor Pro HD archival color ink system, 110ml (the complete set), it seems to show that it includes both vivid magenta and vivid light magenta. If I select Epson 3800 and then look at the individual bottles, it also allows me select vivid light magenta and vivid magenta.

I also just looked at the ink for the P800. The picture for the " SureColor P800 - 110mL - ConeColor Pro HD archival color ink system “Chipless Solution”" is the same as the picture of Pro 3800 - ConeColor Pro HD archival color ink system, 110ml. This seems to indicate the ink colors for the 3800, 3880, and P800 is the same.

Is the website in error?

It looks like the same picture. The description says “It now comes with the High Density Vivid Magenta which is the closest match to the Epson Ultrachrome K3 magenta pigment” Ot doesn’t call out the VLM, but it is in the picture.

From the Website, since they are using the same picture on both the 3800 and P800., I would assume that they are both using the same vivid magentas, and therefore the same inks.

the 3800 kit comes with LM and VMHDX - picture is generic on that one

P800 comes with VLM and VMHDX…
picture also generic on that one…

There no listing of what is contained in each kit, so I looked at the picture to see what it contains. If you’re using a generic picture the person doesn’t know that.

Both VLM and VMHDX are shown as inks being available for the 3800.

Is it possible to get VLM instead of LM? Ia also understood the main difference between the 3800 and 3880 was the VLM and VMHX, If I get VLM for the 3800, can I then use profiles from Cone for the 3880?

Yes sorry about the pics…

You could get the VLM instead of VM. I can switch that at the warehouse before it ships - as long as you let me know you made the order.

But I can not say if the EPSON RGB printer driver is exactly the same in both printer models so I would not be able to say whether 3880 ICC profiles can be used with the 3800. I just do not know. Sorry.

Yep… I would like to swap it out. I ordered on Friday and will send you the order number as a private message.

I’m willing to make my own profiles. I used to do that with the GretagMacbeth eye-one. (Which I still own) Can you recommend a good profiler? Do you guys make customer profiles? If so, what type of spectrometer do you use?
