Epson 1400 printer scratches paper while printing - end of life?

My Epson 1400 printer just started to scratch the back of the sheets being printed. I’m printing on transparency film and the marks or scratches on the back render the printing unusable. I don’t think this is a normal maintenance issue as much as a real “end of lift” issue. I’ve already reset the counter and use a waste ink collector. So I’m replacing the printer with a 1430 version, but I was curious if others have encountered this problem.

Without seeing the scratchy results, but going by your explanation, I wonder if you could get around this by feeding a piece of typing paper behind each sheet of film to protect the back from rubbing and getting scratched in the printer.
