9890 Vivid Magenta has a cyan tint after power clean

I work at a college and we have a 9890 that we use for alt. printing. We have a smattering of refillable inkjetmall carts (LC, LM, LK) + OEM ones. It was sitting idle for a month but it cleaned up decently after a few cycles and a power clean. But after the power clean, the Vivid Magenta channel now has a cyan tinge. I did a search here and skimmed through few posts - could this be a damper problem? Or a bad cartridge (it’s OEM but expired). The VM occasionally disappears entirely but then reappears after a clean. Thanks for any thoughts!

more than likely your capping station and flush box are so dirty that during a cleaning operation your magenta channel is sucking up cyan ink. Ask the person who did the maintenance on the printer what did the capping station look like and was the flush box clear or gunky and did they clean it so it drains properly…

And in general using expired OEM ink is a recipe for losing your print head… the pigment agglomerates and it will force you into repeated cleaning which can delaminate that channel…

Thanks for the help, Jon! That makes sense. The printer is a hand-me-down from our media lab and it was sitting around for awhile before it came to us (we have a 9750 for “good” prints). I’ve cleaned the capping station before but have not checked to see if its draining properly so the line could be full of gunk. And, of course, today it’s working just fine again. Will do a deeper dive into the state of the capping station over winter break. And thanks for the tip on expired ink agglomerating. Most is from 2021 and it’s almost gone so we’re going to get some more of your ink/carts soon!
