The changing nozzles indicates a problematic cleaning unit contact w/ the head and/or bad (old) rubber wiping blade.
aka, the head is clean but then the wiper blades messes it up at the last second. This makes random dropouts.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense! However, after I cleaned the wiper blade with Piezoflush and a foam swab, things got much worse: the nozzle check had missing lines for every color, all midway down the test pattern. Nozzles cleanings made no difference, so I finally cleaned the docking pad again, put four drops of Piezoflush on it, and let it sit for a day. Today the first nozzle check showed a gray line in the center for most colors but otherwise fine, then I did a test print without cleaning, and it came out fine, as did the next nozzle check. Now I’m worried about what will happen if I have to do a cleaning…
Does this mean I should replace the wiper blade and, if so, where do I find one? Compass Micro no longer has them.
