4880 wont load roll paper or manual feed sheet

My 4880 is refusing to accept roll paper. The print head will do its thing looking at the paper and sizing it up, but instead of getting the “ready” a message to “remove paper” comes up. I cant find a stuck paper anywhere in the printer. Any idea why the printer sees things differently than it should?
